COOLSCAN V ED / LS-50 ED
Product type
Dedicated 35mm film scanner

Description

The COOLSCAN V ED is built for turning photographic film into digital files. Its Scanner-Nikkor ED optics, linear CCD sensor and LED illumination scan transmitted light through the film, making it a different tool from a document scanner or a camera aimed at a print.

It is a useful format for a 35mm archive when you want control over resolution, film type and image adjustments. Because this is a legacy model, plan the whole workflow before buying: scanner condition, holders, USB connection and current software support all matter as much as the optical specification.

Features

  • 4,000 dpi optical resolution: captures fine detail from compatible film without relying on an interpolated resolution claim.
  • ED glass optics: Nikon's dedicated film-scanning lens system.
  • 14-bit A/D conversion: with 8-bit or 16-bit output options in the original software workflow.
  • LED illumination: a film-scanning light source with no lamp warm-up required in Nikon's specification.
  • USB connection: connects the scanner to a compatible host computer.
  • Image-correction options: the original Nikon Scan workflow includes Digital ICE, ROC, GEM and DEE, subject to film and software support.

Match the adapter to your film

The original retail package named SA-21 and MA-21 adapters. Confirm the exact accessories and condition supplied with this legacy unit, particularly if you need a specific holder.

Match the adapter to your film
35mm film strips SA-21 strip-film adapter; inspect strip condition and follow its feeding requirements.
Mounted 35mm slides MA-21 slide-mount adapter, rather than a bulk-slide feeder.
APS film Requires a compatible optional IX240 adapter; not established as included.
Other formats Do not assume compatibility with medium-format film or flatbed documents.

Plan software and dust correction

The original Nikon Scan software dates from older Windows and Mac systems. Hamrick currently lists COOLSCAN V ED support in VueScan for Windows, macOS and Linux; verify your operating-system version and license requirements directly before purchase.

Digital ICE is film-dependent. Nikon excludes ordinary silver-based black-and-white film from its ICE workflow and notes that some Kodachrome scans may lose local detail. Compare a test scan with correction on and off before applying it to an entire archive.

Common questions

Can it scan 120 medium-format film?

No medium-format capability is established for the LS-50 ED. This is primarily a 35mm scanner.

Will it work with a current computer?

A current third-party software route is available, but check the exact operating system, USB connection and software license. Do not assume the original Nikon Scan disc is a modern solution.

Is MA-21 an automatic stack feeder?

No. It is a slide-mount adapter. A description of it as a slide feeder should not be read as automatic bulk-slide feeding.

Will every scan finish in 38 seconds?

No. That is a best-case original specification. Resolution, correction options, film, software and the host computer affect total time.
