The five differences that change daily use

1. The ET-3850 has an ADF; the ET-2850 does not

An automatic document feeder is the largest practical difference. With the ET-2850, a ten-page document means opening the lid, aligning a page, scanning, and repeating ten times. The ET-3850 can accept up to 30 sheets in its feeder.

However, the ET-3850 does not automatically capture both sides of an original in one pass. If two-sided scanning is a core job, compare a true duplex document scanner or multifunction printer rather than assuming the duplex-print symbol applies to scanning.

2. The ET-3850 holds 2.5 times as much plain paper

The ET-2850 uses a 100-sheet rear feed. The ET-3850 uses a 250-sheet front tray. That difference is meaningful in a shared office or any workflow that prints long reports. The rear feed on the smaller model can still be convenient for seeing and changing media, but it leaves paper exposed and requires more frequent refills.

3. The ET-3850 is faster on paper

Epson rates the ET-3850 at 15.5 ISO pages per minute in black and 8.5 in color, compared with 10.5 black and 5 color for the ET-2850. The rated black-speed difference is about 48% and the rated color-speed difference is 70%, calculated from the published figures. That does not mean every job finishes by the same percentage; first-page time, duplexing, image complexity, quality, and network transfer still matter.

4. Ethernet makes the ET-3850 easier to anchor on a network

Both models support wireless printing, Wi-Fi Direct, and USB. The ET-3850 adds Ethernet. A wired printer connection can reduce dependence on Wi-Fi signal quality and gives a shared home office a predictable network location. It does not make the printer itself faster than its print engine.

5. They use the same replacement ink family

Both models use Epson T502 replacement bottles. Epson publishes replacement yields of up to 7,500 black pages and 6,000 color pages for this family under its stated test conditions. Choose the ET-3850 when workflow justifies discontinued hardware

The ET-3850 remains relevant because the ADF, 250-sheet tray, Ethernet, and faster rated engine solve real office problems. But “relevant” is not the same as “buy at any price.” Since Epson now marks it discontinued, compare the exact ET-3850 offer with the current replacement, including warranty, support horizon, included ink, return terms, and total delivered cost.

How to estimate ink cost correctly

Do not divide the printer's price by an “up to two years” statement. Estimate with your own page volume:

Record average black and color pages per month.
Find the current price of the exact genuine T502 bottle or set.
Divide price by the applicable published yield.
Add paper and allow for ink used during initial charging and maintenance.
Compare the result over the period you expect to own the printer.

Example formula: estimated black-ink cost per black page = current black-bottle price ÷ 7,500 published pages. Color is not one simple division when a page uses cyan, magenta, and yellow unevenly; use a conservative estimate based on the full set and your actual color coverage.

Print regularly and protect the ink system

EcoTank printers use permanent printheads supplied by refillable tanks.
