Description
The Haworth Fern Digital Knit chair combines a textured back with a structure that flexes as you turn, reach and recline. Inside the backrest, the Wave Suspension system uses a central stem and branching supports rather than a rigid outer frame around your shoulders. The result is a chair that allows movement while maintaining contact with your back.
This Ember version pairs the knit back with an upholstered seat and aluminum swivel base. Choose it for the digital-knit finish and flexible back; an adjustable lumbar insert and headrest are separate Fern options and are not specified for this configuration.
Features
- Digital-knit back: adds textile texture over Fern’s flexible support structure.
- Wave Suspension system: the backrest responds to changes in posture and sideways movement.
- 4D padded arms: adjust height, width, depth and pivot to position support near your keyboard.
- Sliding seat: a 3-inch depth adjustment helps you leave space behind your knees.
- Recline controls: tilt tension changes resistance; the back stop limits how far you lean.
- Aluminum base and soft casters: combine a swivel base with wheels suited to hard-surface applications.

Match the Fern to your desk
The 29-inch overall width is larger than the seat itself. Measure your desk opening and any drawer pedestal before buying, and check arm clearance at the height you actually use.
| Seat depth | Sit back against the backrest, then slide the seat so its edge clears the back of your knees. |
|---|---|
| Keyboard position | Bring the arms close enough to support your forearms without lifting your shoulders. |
| Reclining space | Allow room behind the chair and keep the caster area clear of cables. |
| Flooring | Check your floor manufacturer’s caster guidance; a suitable mat can help protect delicate finishes. |
Digital knit and lumbar support: what to expect
The knit changes the back’s surface feel and appearance; it does not turn the seat into mesh. Fern has a shaped supporting back even without the additional lumbar insert. Owner discussions show different preferences for the extra pad’s pressure, so compare the exact equipment instead of assuming that more options always feel better.
Vacuum the upholstery gently and follow the textile-specific care guidance for stains. Avoid saturating the cushion or applying harsh cleaners.

Common questions
Does this version have adjustable lumbar support?
It has Fern’s shaped flexible back, but the additional adjustable lumbar insert is not listed. Choose a listing that explicitly includes that option if you want it.
Is the seat also digital knit?
The digital-knit designation refers to the back. The seat is upholstered over a cushion.
Can I lock the back completely upright?
Fern includes a back-stop control to limit recline and a separate tension control. Use the adjustment guide to select the stop and resistance you prefer.
Will it fit a smaller person?
Compare the 16.5-inch minimum seat height and 15.5-inch minimum seat depth with your seated measurements. Desk height and arm spacing matter too; a footrest may be useful when the desk requires a higher seat.
