Description
The Perfection V850 Pro is a photographic archiving tool for originals that need more careful positioning than a document feeder allows. Place a print on the glass or load compatible film into the appropriate holder, preview the frame and choose the crop and scan settings before capture.
Its dual-lens system uses different optical paths for supported film and reflective originals. This makes it a more versatile choice for mixed photo collections than a document-only scanner. Allow time for cleaning, previews and image checks: high-resolution film archiving is a deliberate process, not a page-per-minute office task.
Features
- Film and print support: combines a flatbed surface with an integrated transparency unit.
- Dual-lens optics: provide 4800 or 6400 dpi optical scanning depending on media and scan area.
- Film holders: position compatible slides and negatives at the intended scanning height.
- LED light source: avoids a traditional lamp warm-up period.
- Image cleanup tools: supported Digital ICE workflows can reduce certain surface defects on suitable originals.

Choose settings around the original
Clean the glass and holder carefully, handle film by the edges and make a preview before scanning a full set. Use enough resolution for your intended enlargement, rather than selecting the largest file automatically. Keep an unedited master file and make smaller copies for sharing.
| Loose prints | Place on the flatbed and choose a reflective-photo workflow. |
|---|---|
| Slides and negatives | Use the correct holder and film type settings, then verify orientation and crop. |
| Black-and-white film | Check cleanup compatibility; infrared-based defect removal is unsuitable for many traditional silver-based films. |
| Fluid mounting | Requires a separate compatible tray and supplies; it is not the standard holder workflow. |

Common questions
Is 6400 dpi available across every scanning mode?
No. The dual-lens design uses different optical paths depending on the selected media and area. The flatbed and holder-based film modes should not be treated as identical.
Does it have an automatic document feeder?
No. You place originals on the glass or in film holders. It is intended for careful image capture rather than unattended stacks of office paper.
Is a fluid-mount tray included?
No. Epson identifies fluid mounting as an optional accessory workflow. The standard film holders do not mean a fluid-mount kit is supplied.
Will the old software disc work on my computer?
Check Epson’s current driver page and the bundled software vendor’s license/OS requirements. Older packaging lists legacy operating systems, and software upgrades may depend on the scanner serial number.
