Separate printing from scanning
An all-in-one combines functions, but the details still vary. A flatbed works with one original at a time. An automatic document feeder, or ADF, feeds a stack of suitable loose pages. Automatic two-sided printing does not guarantee two-sided scanning; look for the scan specification separately. Fax, Ethernet and Wi-Fi also need individual confirmation.
Compare the cost of using it
Price replacement supplies for the exact model before deciding. Include ink or toner, separately replaced drums or maintenance items where applicable, and the media your work requires. Published yields use standardized test conditions; photographs, page coverage and maintenance change real-world results. Use the manufacturer’s recommended monthly volume to assess routine workload, rather than treating a maximum duty cycle as a daily target.
- Compatibility: confirm current drivers or supported mobile-printing methods for your operating system, especially on older or renewed models.
- Paper handling: check the actual size and weight supported through each tray, including duplex limitations.
- Space: allow room for open trays, a raised scanner lid, cable connections and supply replacement.
Specialty work needs a different shortlist
For example, the Canon imagePROGRAF GP-200 is a 24-inch large-format model, a different category from a desktop document all-in-one. Thermal models likewise use their own compatible labels or receipt media. Direct thermal prints without a ribbon; thermal transfer uses one. Choose the media system to suit the application and expected label life.

Start with your documents, color and media requirements, then compare the exact models’ running costs and workload guidance. Neither technology is the lowest-cost or best-quality option for every task.
Does wireless mean it supports my phone?
Not automatically. Check the supported mobile-printing method and the network or app requirements. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPrint and Wi-Fi Direct are different capabilities.
Can a shipping-label printer replace an office printer?
Usually it serves a different job. Compare maximum print width, supported media and software. A label printer designed around small rolls is not a substitute for ordinary letter-size document printing.
